How is the Avocado Green Mattress constructed?
Cover: The cover is hand-tufted and made from organic cotton and GOTS organic certified wool. The cover is designed to wick away moisture, making it extra breathable. Note that it’s a non-removable cover.
Pillow-top (optional): If you decide to go with the pillow-top version, then this 2-inch layer of organic Dunlop latex foam helps to make the mattress feel plusher in order to reduce pressure. This latex is softer than the comfort layers, but still provides a stable sleep surface.
Comfort Layer: This layer is made up of 2-inches of GOLS certified Dunlop latex. It helps to regulate the temperature and prevents sleepers from sinking into the support core.
Transitional Layer: Before the support layer, there is a 1-inch layer of very firm Dunlop latex.
Support Layers: Finally, to make this mattress a proper hybrid, this 8-inch section is made from up to 1,414 individually pocketed, recycled steel coils. This is what gives the bed a bouncy and supportive feeling. This layer is also broken into five strategic zones to support your hips, back and shoulders. These internal zoned units make the bed slightly firmer in the lumbar region and softer in the shoulders and feet in order to maintain proper spinal alignment.

Transitional Layer: Then comes 3-inches of denser latex to provide extra cushion and support.

How does the Avocado Green Mattress compare to competing brands?

Saatva
Both Avocado and Saatva offer coil-foam hybrid mattresses that lean towards the firmer end of the spectrum. Though, Saatva is a more traditional innerspring mattress feel and offers three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and a firm (7.5), which is most similar to the Avocado.
With the Avocado Green mattress, you can choose to add on a pillow-top, but with Saatva, the pillow-top is part of the design. Zenhaven stands out because it’s flippable, making it a great mattress for people who are unsure of the firmness level they want. You can flip the mattress for a Luxury Plush feeling on one side and a Gentle Firm feeling on the other side. And while the Avocado Green mattress uses a pocketed coil system in the support layer, Zenhaven uses more Talalay latex. In this way, it’s more similar to the newer Avocado Latex model.

Avocado and Awara are both eco-friendly leading brands that have committed to sustainable and organic production. They are typically the go-to brands for customers looking to find a green mattress. Their flagship models are both similar in design as they are both latex hybrids. And like the Avocado Green mattress, the Awara mattress’s pocketed coils are zoned for spinal support.
Overall, the Awara is slightly softer in feel and has a simple two-layer construction made from Dunlop latex and pocketed innerspring coils. While the Avocado has a slightly different construction, they are both made from the same materials. As a result, both mattresses perform similarly in regards to responsiveness, breathability and durability. Although Awara has a forever warranty and is more affordable, there is just no vegan option.

Birch is the natural and organic mattress offering from Helix Sleep. They are both hybrid latex mattresses made with eco-friendly materials (100% organic cotton and wool). And both models are made with individually wrapped steel coils in the support layer to reinforce durability, breathability and edge support. While they are quite similar in construction, the Birch has no pillow-top upgrade or zoned system in its support core.
For average to heavy-weight stomach or back sleepers that want a responsive, firm bed, the Birch mattress is perfect. That being said, when it comes to motion isolation, this is where Birch performs better than Avocado because of its thick layer of wool on the top. On the other hand, the Avocado Green mattress may be better suited to support lighter-weight and heavier sleepers, especially with the pillow-top. Birch also runs slightly more expensive.
