Best Known for

Avocado is the new green mattress company that has set the bar high when it comes to creating mattresses that are comfortable, durable and eco-friendly—all at a reasonable price point. As it says on their website: Sleep well, help the planet.

There is no doubt that Avocado is one of the most eco-friendly brands we’ve seen. It’s one thing to jump on the eco-conscious trend, but it’s another to actually be recognized and certified. Avocado is both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified. This essentially means that they’re officially recognized for harvesting raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible means. They are also the world’s first mattress brand to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all of their operations.

Their mattresses are luxurious, made with only organic and natural materials. By all accounts, the Avocado Green Mattress is their most popular model and we’ll examine it more in depth throughout this review. It’s a hybrid mattress that is made with naturally-sourced latex and pocketed coils to provide the ultimate environmentally conscious sleep experience.

This all sounds great, but you’re probably still wondering...is this bed a good fit for me?

Who might like the Avocado Green mattress?

  • Hot sleepers

Latex is one of the most naturally cooling and breathable materials. If you add that with a breathable cover layer of cotton or wool (materials that wick away moisture), then you will experience better than average temperature neutrality.

  • Heavier sleepers

Latex is a very durable and resilient material, so you won’t have to worry about any breakdowns and are assured a longer lifespan, regardless of your weight.

  • Back, Stomach and Side Sleepers

We’ve included all the sleeping positions here because the Avocado Green is a good match for any type of sleeper, depending on whether you add the pillow-top or not. As such, the standard Avocado Mattress is perfect for stomach and back sleepers, while the Pillow-top version is adequate for side sleepers.

  • Eco-conscious shoppers

If you’re looking for a mattress that is non-toxic, healthy, organic and even vegan—then the Avocado Green mattress is the one for you. With several certifications of sustainability, including GOTS, GOLS, USDA Organic, GREENGUARD Gold and Climate Neutral certified, you can get a good sleep while helping the planet.

  • Scent-sensitive individuals

Because Avocado is committed to hand-crafted construction and uses no chemical flame retardants or synthetic materials, there is a low chance that there will be any initial off-gassing smells or chemical residue.

  • Those looking for a long-term investment

The Avocado Green mattress is on the pricier side, however; it's skillfully tufted together by hand and made with high-quality, durable materials such as 100% organic certified latex, cotton and wool. Moreover, the core base layer is made up of individually wrapped innersprings made from recycled steel, each of which are wrapped in food-grade polypropylene for durability.

A bit about Avocado

Avocado is on a journey to make healthy sleep accessible and affordable. After noticing that true non-toxic, organic and affordable mattresses were hard to find, co-founders Jeff D'Andrea, Dan D'Andrea, Jay Decker and Mark Abrials launched the Avocado Green mattress in 2016.

The mattress design was originally born in Hoboken, New Jersey; and now the mattresses are made in Avocado-owned factories located in Orange County, Los Angeles. Avocado is best known for its Green flagship model, a hybrid mattress which is also available in a Vegan option. In addition, the company produces a crib mattress made from certified organic materials. They have also expanded to sell green pillows, mattress pad protectors, toppers, and natural wooden bedroom furniture.

Avocado is a certified B corporation, meaning they balance people and profit. This means they are legally required to consider the impact of decisions on workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

How is the Avocado Green Mattress constructed?

Cover: The cover is hand-tufted and made from organic cotton and GOTS organic certified wool. The cover is designed to wick away moisture, making it extra breathable. Note that it’s a non-removable cover.

Pillow-top (optional): If you decide to go with the pillow-top version, then this 2-inch layer of organic Dunlop latex foam helps to make the mattress feel plusher in order to reduce pressure. This latex is softer than the comfort layers, but still provides a stable sleep surface.

Comfort Layer: This layer is made up of 2-inches of GOLS certified Dunlop latex. It helps to regulate the temperature and prevents sleepers from sinking into the support core.

Transitional Layer: Before the support layer, there is a 1-inch layer of very firm Dunlop latex.

Support Layers: Finally, to make this mattress a proper hybrid, this 8-inch section is made from up to 1,414 individually pocketed, recycled steel coils. This is what gives the bed a bouncy and supportive feeling. This layer is also broken into five strategic zones to support your hips, back and shoulders. These internal zoned units make the bed slightly firmer in the lumbar region and softer in the shoulders and feet in order to maintain proper spinal alignment.

How is the Avocado Latex constructed?

Cover: The cover is hand-tufted and made from organic cotton and GOTS organic certified wool. The cover is designed to wick away moisture, making it extra breathable and cozy to sleep on. Note that it’s a non-removable cover.

Comfort Layer: This layer is 2-inches of GOLS, contoured Dunlop latex that is designed into 3 zones. Using lasers, they cut peaks and valleys into the bottom of this layer in order to better target your body’s curves and enhance pressure relief.

Transitional Layer: Then comes 3-inches of denser latex to provide extra cushion and support.

Support Layers: Lastly is 4-inches of firm, GOLS Certified Organic Dunlop latex to ensure lasting durability and support.

How does the Avocado Green Mattress compare to competing brands?

Avocado

Avocado logo

Saatva

Both Avocado and Saatva offer coil-foam hybrid mattresses that lean towards the firmer end of the spectrum. Though, Saatva is a more traditional innerspring mattress feel and offers three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and a firm (7.5), which is most similar to the Avocado.

With the Avocado Green mattress, you can choose to add on a pillow-top, but with Saatva, the pillow-top is part of the design. Rather than using natural latex, Saatva’s mattress is made with a thin layer of memory foam followed by two layers of durable steel coils. The coil-on-coil construction of the Saatva mattress makes it supportive and better suited towards heavyweight sleepers and back sleepers that want good spinal support. Not to mention, the Saatva is priced slightly lower than Avocado.

Avocado

Zenhaven

Zenhaven is a 100%, all natural Talalay latex mattress made by Saatva. Like the Avocado Green Mattress, it uses all-natural latex in the comfort layer. Both mattresses are durable, bouncy and incredibly breathable. They are also both constructed with zoned construction that provides greater support and pressure relief in the lumbar region.

Zenhaven stands out because it’s flippable, making it a great mattress for people who are unsure of the firmness level they want. You can flip the mattress for a Luxury Plush feeling on one side and a Gentle Firm feeling on the other side. And while the Avocado Green mattress uses a pocketed coil system in the support layer, Zenhaven uses more Talalay latex. In this way, it’s more similar to the newer Avocado Latex model.

Awara

Avocado and Awara are both eco-friendly leading brands that have committed to sustainable and organic production. They are typically the go-to brands for customers looking to find a green mattress. Their flagship models are both similar in design as they are both latex hybrids. And like the Avocado Green mattress, the Awara mattress’s pocketed coils are zoned for spinal support.

Overall, the Awara is slightly softer in feel and has a simple two-layer construction made from Dunlop latex and pocketed innerspring coils. While the Avocado has a slightly different construction, they are both made from the same materials. As a result, both mattresses perform similarly in regards to responsiveness, breathability and durability. Although Awara has a forever warranty and is more affordable, there is just no vegan option.

Birch

Birch logo

Birch is the natural and organic mattress offering from Helix Sleep. They are both hybrid latex mattresses made with eco-friendly materials (100% organic cotton and wool). And both models are made with individually wrapped steel coils in the support layer to reinforce durability, breathability and edge support. While they are quite similar in construction, the Birch has no pillow-top upgrade or zoned system in its support core.

For average to heavy-weight stomach or back sleepers that want a responsive, firm bed, the Birch mattress is perfect. That being said, when it comes to motion isolation, this is where Birch performs better than Avocado because of its thick layer of wool on the top. On the other hand, the Avocado Green mattress may be better suited to support lighter-weight and heavier sleepers, especially with the pillow-top. Birch also runs slightly more expensive.
