Casper is one of the most recognizable mattress brands. In fact, their mattresses are impossible to miss if you’re in the market for a brand new mattress. This is the brand that started the bed-in-a-box revolution.

Since their launch in 2014, Casper has created comfortable mattress models in a variety of styles—their most popular one being their flagship mattress. The Casper Original features a triple-layer memory foam and polyfoam comfort system, in addition to a 7-inch high-density polyfoam support core.

Best Known for

Casper is specifically known for their Zoned Support System—a layer consisting of three ergonomic zones of support that target and support your spine more than an average memory foam mattress.

But is it worthy of all the hype and buzz? Will it help you get a restful night’s sleep?

Who might like Casper?

  • Back and combination sleepers
Casper’s original mattress is made out of varying foam densities that gives it a good balance of support and pressure relief. Though the materials feel soft, its 3-zoned memory foam layer is made to keep sleepers balanced and provide extra support around the midsection.

  • Back pain sufferers
As a mixed foam mattress that conforms closely to the body and relieves aches and pains in sensitive areas like the back. The Zoned support system is firmer toward the center to provide strong lumbar support.

  • Budget-conscious households
Casper is known for being one of the most affordable mattresses on the market. Their mattresses are labeled at value price and offer more of a deal compared to competitors.

  • Couples
Memory foam is one of the best noise-free materials for isolating motion. Constructed with multiple layers of foam, and with memory foam in the comfort layer, this mattress minimizes motion significantly, making it ideal for those who wake up easily due to their partner.

  • People who weigh 230 pounds or less
Because the Casper mattress is a medium firm, more traditional memory foam mattress, it may be too soft for individuals over this weight bracket. In this case, the Casper Hybrid may be a better option for more support.

A bit about Casper

It all started with wanting to re-invent the sleep and mattress industry. And that’s when Casper was born in 2014 by founders Philip Krim, Neil Parikh, Luke Sherwin, Jeff Chapin and Gabriel Flateman. They wanted to create a mattress buying, user-friendly experience that was easy and catered to customers.

That’s when the Original Casper Mattress was designed and launched into the world, and it’s set the high standard for other mattress start-ups that have entered the market. In what they refer to as their ‘Casper Labs”, they study the magic and science behind getting a good night’s sleep. By testing for the perfect sleep temperature, spinal alignment and durability—their focus is primarily on products that are based on real customer’s needs and feedback.

Since then they’ve rapidly grown into being one of the most recognizable names. They’ve also expanded their product selection and sell three different mattresses, three different pillows, bed frames, bedding, sleep accessories and more. Beyond that, they’re passionate about giving back and have already donated over 70,000 sleep products to people in need

Casper is definitely one of the toughest competitors and most admired brands in the direct-to-consumer mattress space. Continue reading to learn more about the different mattresses they offer and how they compare to each other and competitor models.

How is the Original Casper Hybrid Mattress constructed?

This mattress was designed as a version of the flagship all-foam mattress described above. It doesn’t feel much different than the original model but it does have some small differences in the design.

Cover: The top layer is 1.5” of Airscape perforated breathable polyfoam that increases airflow and conforms to your body to relieve pressure. Each mattress cover is also made with up to 57 recycled bottles.

Comfort Layers: This 2” memory foam layer features the same three zoned support system that the original all-foam mattress has.  These zones are specifically made to align your spine and provide more pressure relief.

Support Layers: Like other hybrid mattresses, this 6” layer is made from resilient, pocketed coils encased in 1” of polyfoam to add more bounce, support and airflow.

Cover: The Casper Wave Hybrid cover is made from a knit polyester blend and a thin coating of cooling gel.

Comfort Layers: Right under the cover is the first 1” layer of Casper’s special Airscape foam that is aerated to promote breathability throughout the mattress. Then comes another 1.5” layer of Airscape made with tiny holes that let hot air and body heat out.

Below these two layers is a 1.5” section of Casper’s tri-zoned memory foam, which is constructed strategically with three zones that provide targeted pressure relief to different areas of your body.

Transition Layer: In this 1.5” layer is another section of tri-zoned polyfoam that not only reinforces the supportive layer above, but also promotes better spinal alignment with the addition of gel pods under the waist and lower back. This is unique to the Casper Wave Hybrid and it’s what makes the mattress feel more luxurious, and the most advanced support system for spinal alignment.

Support Layer: In the final 6” layer is a tall section of pocketed coils encased in high-density polyfoam to stabilize the bed and prevent sagging.

Cover: The cover is made from premium foam that is plush and stretchy, which helps you achieve a cozy, comfortable sleep.

Comfort Layers: Next is a 1” layer of Casper’s Airscape open cell polyfoam that is plush, responsive and created with small holes to increase airflow and maximize cooling. This will feel more responsive and bouncy compared to memory foam but hot sleepers will appreciate the breathability.

Next up is a 1.5” layer made of Airscape foam that is ventilated and zoned to align your spine and provide more relief. It’s divided into three different foam sections; there’s firmer foam at the hips and lower back then softer foam at the shoulders.

Transition Layer: This layer is an upgrade from the standard tri-zoned support, and is constructed with 7 support zones to help provide more support under the waist and maintain a neutral spine, regardless of your sleep position.

Support Layers: The final layer and foundation of the Nova Hybrid model is made from resilient pocketed coils encased in high-density foam. This layer is instrumental in lifting sleepers up and reinforcing strong edge support. Not to mention, pocketed coils are a great way of promoting extra airflow.

How does the Casper Mattress compare to competing brands?

Casper vs Purple

Both of these brands are well-known, popular trailblazers in the bed-in-a-box industry, boasting numerous positive reviews. They both offer superior mattresses made of high-quality, safe materials. And their mattresses have comparable price points, though Purple’s models are slightly more expensive. When it comes to their flagship models, Casper’s provides a softer, more supportive feeling and Purple’s sleeps cooler and is more responsive overall. See how they stack up against each other more in our comparison guide.

Casper vs Nectar

Nectar is another popular and successful brand in the industry, making them one of Casper’s biggest competitors. Both their flagship mattresses are all-foam and do a superb job at offering both comfort and pressure relief to sleepers. Where they differ is mostly the diversity of materials used in their construction. Nectar is made with thick layers of memory foam and Casper uses a blend of memory foam, latex and zoned polyfoam. As a result, Nectar is better suited to memory foam lovers and strict side sleepers, while Casper is better suited to combo sleepers and couples. See how they stack up against each other more in our comparison guide.

Casper vs Tuft & Needle

Like Casper, Tuft & Needle is a recognizable name in the bed-in-a-box market. In fact, their flagship models are two of the best-selling mattresses that feature similar base foam layers. Where they differ is predominantly in the number of layers and firmness differences. The Casper mattress has four layers and features a zoned construction. The T&N mattress has two layers and is on the firmer side of things, making it more suited to average weight and heavier sleepers. Neither mattress is overly expensive—though if you’re on more of a budget, the T&N mattress runs at a lower price-point. To learn more about how these mattresses fare against each other, check out our Casper vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress comparison.

Casper vs Leesa

Both Casper and Leesa’s standard mattress models are made entirely of foam, but they are more responsive compared to other traditional all-foam mattresses. Yet, each mattress is distinct and unique when it comes to how it feels to sleep on it. If you want a balanced and contouring mattress, then the Original Casper mattress is the best choice, especially if you want that cushy, memory foam feeling. But if you want a slightly firmer and supportive mattress for your back and hips, Leesa is the way to go. See how these mattresses fare against each other in our full Casper vs Leesa mattress comparison.

Casper vs Tulo

Tulo came from brick-and-mortar mattress retailer Mattress Firm. People love that Tulo mattresses come in three different firmness options (soft, medium-soft and firm), which means that a wide range of sleepers can benefit. Casper’s original mattress runs medium-firm, but still provides good pressure relief for lightweight and average sleepers. Not to mention it sleeps cooler than most memory foam mattresses. See how they stack up against each other more in our comparison guide.

Casper trial, warranty and delivery policies

The Casper mattress is available on their website, Amazon, Target, and brick-and-mortar Casper sleep shop locations around the U.S.

They sell their mattresses to Canada and all 50 states. Free standard shipping is offered to all customers in the 48 contiguous U.S. and most of Canada. They charge for shipping to Alaska, Hawaii and Northern Canada (Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories).
Caspers offers customers a 100-day trial period. This trial does not require a break-in period. Any eligible mattresses can be returned for full price, including shipping fees, by contacting Casper’s customer support team within this time. They will arrange for someone to pick up the mattress and it will either be recycled or donated to charity.
Casper’s mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty. This warranty protects you from defects that include indentations deepers than 1 inch, physical flaws that cause the mattress material to split and cover zipper defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the money, value and quality, the Casper mattress can’t be beat. It’s a well-rounded, accommodating and supportive mattress. It’s also unique in how it’s created intentionally with multiple levels of foam, each layer providing an essential benefit to the sleeper. Of course, everyone will have their own standards, but we firmly believe Casper is worth the money.

Each mattress will be a better fit for different types of people, so we can’t conclusively say which Casper mattress is the best one. But if you’re looking for a safe, easy pick, the Original Casper mattress is a good place to start; and it’s the flagship model that was a trailblazer for the industry.

While it’s good to have a strong bed frame, you don’t need a box spring for the Casper mattress. In fact, according to the company’s site, a traditional box spring will not provide the flat, even support your Casper needs and could damage the mattress. They recommend using their own foundation instead.

Considering Casper has a 10-year warranty, a Casper mattress can last you anywhere from 8 - 10 years, about the average lifespan of most mattresses.

Best Mattress Finder Conclusion

Overall, we stand behind Casper as a brand. They offer a fantastic line-up of well made mattresses and their zoned support system is incredibly beneficial for those suffering from frequent back or shoulder pain. It’s also one of the best mattresses for sciatica.

What we love most is how well the Casper mattress strikes a good balance between contouring and responsiveness. We’re impressed by the breathable foam layers they use to create a highly durable, but also comfortable mattress. And the fact that Casper uses recycled bottles to make their mattress covers is the cherry on top!
