What does this review include

In this review, we highlight the Puffy brand and all of the current mattresses they sell. We draw comparisons between the mattresses to help you identify the perfect one for you.

If you don’t have much time, here’s a quick overview of the subjects that we’ll be covering in this Puffy mattress review.

Have you ever looked out the window at the clouds and wondered what it would feel like to sleep on them? Surely, everybody has thought this at some point, and that includes Puffy’s founder, Arthur Andreasyan. In fact, that’s where the idea of Puffy first came from.

Best Known for

Since founding in 2017, Puffy promises that sleeping on one of their mattresses is like sleeping on a cloud. Here they are referring to their two all-foam luxury mattresses: the Puffy and Puffy Lux. From the beginning, they’ve looked at the relationship between body pain and sleep loss, to develop products that help people get the sleep they deserve and wake up ache free.

The Puffy Mattress is their flagship bed-in-a-box model that features three layers of quality, proprietary materials that are designed for comfort, cooling and pressure relief. Then the Puffy Lux is constructed with four unique layers of foam to closely reduce pressure points and maintain spinal alignment.

Both mattresses have excellent qualities and benefits, but they suit different types of people. For the most part, we’ll be looking at their flagship mattress, but we’ll also be comparing and evaluating the Puffy Lux.

Who might like the Puffy mattress?

  • Lightweight sleepers

Puffy is better suited towards light and medium-weight sleepers because of the many foam layers. Because it’s closer to a medium feeling and made with extra-soft memory foam comfort layers, some heavier sleepers may feel like they need something a bit more firm. On the other hand, it will feel just right for most lightweight sleepers who will feel cradled enough, but also supported by its layers.

  • Back sleepers

The Puffy provides great back and lumbar support for back sleepers under 230 pounds. The comfort layers, specifically the Climate Comfort Foam, is designed to alleviate tension in the lumbar region.

  • Side sleepers

This is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers because the Puffy shines when it comes to relieving pressure. It simultaneously provides a deep cradle, spinal alignment and soft comfort. High contouring memory foam helps to respond at common pressure points like the shoulders and hips. However, heavier side sleepers may need something firmer.

  • Couples

For people that share the bed with a partner, you’re going to want a mattress that excels at isolating motion, and this is something the Puffy Mattress does very well. It’s constructed with slow-moving memory foam on top, which is known for isolating motion and minimizing movement across the mattress surface—perfect for couples that have different sleep patterns.

  • Individuals needing pressure relief

Puffy mattresses have gone through rigorous study and testing to ensure they alleviate pressure points during sleep. That’s why their award winning Cooling Cloud Foam layer took over 4 years to design. It’s made to be soft and firm in all the right places, gently forming to your body and alleviating pressure points typically felt in the shoulders and hips.

A bit about Puffy

Puffy all started when founder and CEO Arthur Andreasyan asked a question with a relatable child-like essence: “what would it feel like to sleep on a bed of clouds?”

Puffy believes that everyone deserves to comfortably sleep longer and deeper. As such, they made a mattress that is specifically targeted at people who experience body pain. In a short amount of time, they have already made themselves known in a very saturated industry. Though their specialized all-foam mattresses and sleep products may have something to do with that.

And after four years of research and development, Puffy’s flagship mattress was officially launched into the market in 2017. In regards to the initial question, this is something that their mattresses are known for—pressure relieving support and soft cradling that is akin to what we would imagine sleeping on a cloud would feel like. The Puffy Mattress is their most affordable model, and the Puffy Lux is their most popular, upgraded model. Besides mattresses, the company sells a variety of sleep products like bedding and bases.

Puffy also operates a Mattress Donation Program in partnership with leading non-profits across the country. For every 10 social media posts that tag Puffy, the company donates a mattress to one of their partners.

All Puffy mattresses are manufactured in the U.S. or Canada.

Puffy Mattress

How is the Puffy Mattress constructed?

Cover: The cover is made from 100% polyester that is thin, breathable, soft, hypoallergenic and stain-resistant.

Comfort Layers: There are two comfort layers in the Puffy Mattress. The first comfort layer is 2 inches of gel-infused “Cooling Cloud Foam”; this works to promote exceptional cooling and deep pressure relief. Next is 2 inches of “Climate Comfort” polyfoam; and this layer acts as both a comfort and transition layer. It’s denser than memory foam and helps to prevent sleepers from sinking too far in the mattress while also adapting to the body for pressure relief and spinal alignment.

Support Layer: The Puffy Mattress has a 6-inch Firm Core Support layer of polyfoam that provides overall stability and structure to the mattress.

  • Firmness:
    Medium-plush

How is the Puffy Lux Mattress constructed?

Cover: Like the Original Puffy Mattress, the Puffy Lux is made with a stain-resistant, 100% polyester cover that is soft and breathable.

Comfort Layers: Next up is a 1.5 inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, or what Puffy calls their “Cooling Cloud Foam”, which is designed to promote airflow and deep pressure relief. This is followed by 1.5 inches of polyfoam to provide additional body contouring and support.

Transitional Layer: The transition layer is 2 inches of denser polyfoam to keep sleepers from sinking into the base layer.

Support Layer: And finally, the support core is made from 7 inches of high-density polyfoam to reinforce the structure of the mattress while also encouraging good spinal alignment.

How does the Puffy Mattress compare to competing brands?

Purple

Casper

Casper is one of the first bed-in-a-box companies that everyone knows. And while Puffy launched a few years later, they have also made a name for themselves. Both Casper and Puffy make mattresses that provide similar benefits like pressure relief and breathability. They’re both all-foam beds that are perfect for most sleep positions and weights, but neither is ideal for heavier individuals. The main difference is evident with the specific foam materials used. Casper is made with denser foams and a Zoned Support System that makes it feel more supportive for back and stomach sleepers. But the Puffy has softer foams that give it a softer feel and more pressure-relief for side sleepers.

Who should get the Puffy?

  • Light and medium-weight side sleepers
  • Those who want a deeper cradle
  • Couples

Who should get the Casper?

  • Combination sleepers
  • Those who want a balanced foam feeling
  • Hot sleepers

The Puffy

Nectar

Both the Puffy and Nectar are industry-leading all-foam mattresses with lifetime warranties. While they both feature a similar base foam and slow-moving memory foam in the top layer, they do give different feelings and benefits. For starters, the Nectar uses high-density comfort layers and Puffy uses foams with less density, which makes the Nectar a better option for heavier weight side sleepers.

It’s important to note that both mattresses perform equally in terms of body contouring and deep pressure relief at the shoulders, hips and lower back. However, because Nectar is made with more memory foam, it will provide slightly more sinkage for those looking for a deeper hug. Overall, both mattresses are made with non-toxic, soft, breathable foam materials that provide a medium-firm feeling.

Who should get the Puffy?

  • Light to medium-weight sleepers
  • Side and back sleepers
  • Those who want a balanced foam feeling

Who should get the Nectar?

  • Budget-conscious shoppers
  • Sleepers of all weights and side sleepers, except lightweight stomach sleepers or heavier back sleepers
  • Those who want a softer, slow-moving memory foam feeling

The Puffy

Purple

Purple logo

Both Puffy and Purple are memory foam mattresses but they differ significantly in construction and feeling, specifically in the comfort layers. The Puffy is a memory foam mattress that uses their own cooling memory foam layer over a more responsive layer while the Purple features their proprietary hyper-elastic gel grid over a foam transition layer. While they have firmness differences, each is going to feel different depending on the weight of the sleeper. Because the Purple is made with a buckling gel grid, it collapses the right amount of pressure relief. However, average to heavyweight sleepers may feel the effects of this more, while light-to-medium weight sleepers won’t be heavy enough to collapse into it.

Overall, Puffy has a softer, balanced foam feeling that is more cradling, while the Purple has a slightly more responsive, bouncy feeling that allows for better mobility.

Who should get the Puffy?

  • Light to medium-weight sleepers
  • Back and side sleepers
  • Couples
  • Those who prefer a softer, foam feeling

Who should get the Purple?

  • Heavier back and side sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers
  • Those who prefer responsive and bouncy support
  • Hot sleepers

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Puffy mattresses good?
Based on initial observations and more in-depth research, we can confidently say that Puffy mattresses are good. That being said, they will be better for certain types of sleepers, specifically lighter to average weight sleepers, and those that sleep on their sides.

Which Puffy mattress is the best?
While both Puffy mattresses are comfortable, the Puffy Lux offers more contouring and deeper pressure relief due to an extra layer of foam. If you’re a side sleeper, then the Puffy Lux will do a better job at cradling your shoulders and hips.

Can you flip a Puffy mattress?
The Puffy Mattress is designed not to be flipped because it’s constructed from top to bottom in a strategic way. Though the company does recommend rotating it 180 degrees if necessary on occasion.

How long does a Puffy mattress last?
Based on the construction and materials, we expect that a well-maintained Puffy mattress will last for around 7 to 10 years (the average lifespan of a good mattress).
